My family of 65 goes to Mohonk Mountain House every Thanksgiving for five days. Yep, you read that right, 65 people in a resort on a mountain top, eating, relaxing, and doing alllll the activities together for a long holiday weekend. It’s insane in the best way ever.
Mohonk is a very popular retreat for those that live in New York City and the surrounding area. Only a quick hour and a half from Manhattan, Mohonk is the perfect escape for busy New Yorkers. Mohonk sits high on the mountain tops in the middle of Hudson Valley. If you follow me, or any of my (65!) family members on social media, I’m sure you’ve seen the eye-catching photos of Mohonk – it looks like an incredible castle!
Mohonk is a luxury resort, but it’s never lost it’s humble, and rustic roots. Founded in 1869, and still run by the same family, Mohonk is a true family-friendly, yet also a romantic escape. You won’t find TV’s or alarm clocks in the rooms, and the decor is laid back and old-school. By the time I leave, I always feel refreshed and relaxed, after being able to disconnect for a few days. Although casual and cozy, Mohonk has a world-class spa, the most comfy corners perfect for sitting next to a fire place all day, and a world-renowned dining hall, where you’ll find world-class chefs and an impressive wine list. I love Mohonk for being casual, yet upscale in the best way.

When we drive up to the castle, we don’t leave for the next five days. Mohonk is an all-inclusive hotel, so rates include almost all activities, and three meals a day in their award-winning dinning hall. It’s so fun getting dressed up each night with everyone and enjoying all of our meals together all weekend. Nights are spent sipping wine in the cozy first floor lounge after dinner, or square dancin’ with the cousins. Yes, I said square dancin’. It’s a tradition!
Our days are spent hiking around the mountain trails, or along Lake Mohonk. The ladies always spend a day at the spa getting a massage, or just relaxing in the famous Veranda next to the fire place sipping tea. A trip to the mountain house isn’t complete without a few laps around the skating rink, followed up by a dip in their impressive pool. Around late afternoon, you can always find a few of us at tea time, drinking “Mohonk” tea and snacking on fresh cookies.
I’m so grateful to have this special time with family at Mohonk. If you’re in need of a romantic escape from your busy life, or a weekend filled with family time, a weekend at Mohonk is well worth the trip! I’m hoping to visit in the summer one of these years..
I’m already missing the chilly east coast!
