Welcome to Weekend Whims — South Lake Tahoe Edition
Hope you’re having a great week! I’m starting a new series today, which I’ll be posting about weekly on the blog: Weekend Whims. These posts will cover quick weekend trips, or what I did at home in the city the previous weekend. I hope these quick posts with classic iPhone photos give you a few ideas on where to eat, exercise, or play in San Francisco and surrounding areas. I’ve noticed a lot of blogs getting inundated with professional, not-so-real-life photos, and although I love a good profesh pic, I’m on a mission to keep it real and relatable around here.
This weekend we rented a house in South Lake Tahoe with a bunch of K’s work friends. I was a little apprehensive spending the weekend with a bunch of people I’ve never met, and on top of that, sharing a home with them for three days. I also just got back from a super long trip five days before, and was craving a slow weekend at home. But, of course, I’m so glad I went! It was one of the best trips to Tahoe yet. We usually go to Squaw Valley, and to be honest, I’ve never really considered South Lake, but I’m officially a convert.
I left the city around 3:30pm on Friday, and besides hitting a bit of traffic in Marin, it was smooth sailing getting to the mountains, which, if you live in San Francisco, you’ll know that’s insanely rare. I think people were just to tired from the holidays and used that weekend to re-charge. We stopped at In-N-Out on the way, it’s a tradition, after all!
Once we got to Tahoe, we quickly checked into our VRBO — the biggest and coolest house rental we’ve ever had! The house was definitely high-end in the 80s but does need quite the fixture and appliance update. That said, the views were out-of-this-world, the home was HUGE, and we all had our own room/bathroom, which is key when traveling with a group!

We headed to McP’s Irish Pub to meet up with the group, then followed it up with a drink at the casinos. What’s a trip to South Lake without a stop over the line in Nevada?!
We woke up early Saturday morning and made a huge breakfast feast, plus mimosas — hard core skiers over here 😉
Heavenly Ski Resort was AMAZING! Talk about the perfect blue bird ski days. We spent the whole day skiing, eating chili, and sipping on après ski provisions.
We headed back to the house after and cooked a huge feast of grilled chicken and steak, sweet potato fries, pesto pasta, and grilled asparagus. We followed dinner up with red wine and cookies by the fire. Such a fun weekend!
